This really is the fastest JPEG viewer for Windows!
Quick comparison:
Jview 386, FASTEST JPEG viewer (freeware) up to 93/19/1
vs.
wecj! FASTEST JPEG viewer (freeware) as of 93/20/1 :-)
Test machine: 386/25, 8 megs RAM, 16bit SVGA (ATI Graphics Ultra Plus)
Test file : nmxlb106.jpg, 574x894x24bit
Program Time* Comments Options
---------------------------------------------------------------
Jview 1min8sec - Default options
---------------------------------------------------------------
Wecj 35sec (!) Fast but Default options
grainy output
---------------------------------------------------------------
Wecj 28sec Nice output Grayscale
*Rounded to the nearest second. Image viewed once. Windows was
loaded on top of a DOS session, so timings are somewhat longer
than normal. (Ex: Jview, in a normal Windows session, loads
nmxlb106.jpg in 1min1sec.) Times go down accordingly.
I feel this is the best Freeware JPEG viewer NOW for Windows! Good job. I
am wondering though, what source code was used? I am certain Jview uses
version 3 source code, perhaps a late beta of version 2. If Wecj uses
version 4 source code, then it is possible this is the cause for the speed
increase. What happens when the other viewers come out with version 4
source code?
For now, Wecj is the best! A nice readme to go along with it to explain
the program more would be nice. But as is, it is a wonderful viewer, quick
and functional. I drool to think how quick it would be on a 486/33..
(You out there, Metallica? :-) If you are on a 486/33, times should be
about 2.5x less.. Perhaps a greater disparity if you are on 16bit viewing
hardware.
It is recommended to use the grayscale viewing palette if quality is
important. Else, the default color mode is very nice for quick views. I
cannot understand why on my 16bit display it looks so grainy, though..

WinECJ version 1.0
Yes, yet another JPEG viewer for Windows, and FAST!
How fast is FAST? Well, you'll have to judge for yourself.
This is certainly faster than anything that I've seen.
You'll have to run Windows 3.1 in 256 colour mode, and the
higher the resolution the better.
WinECJ is FREE, and can be freely distributed for private
use provided you include this brief description and
make no modifications.
